Go Tell It On The Mountain
A Historical Sketch of our Life Together
Linden Park United Church traces its roots back to 1856 as the Evangelical Association began its work on Market Street in downtown Hamilton near the market square. In 1946 the Evangelical Church and the United Brethren in Christ united to become the Evangelical United Brethren Church. This faithful group realized that if the witness of the church was to reach its full potential a move to the Mountain was necessary. Hamilton was experiencing very rapid growth and the Mountain was the scene where this was taking place. In 1953 the Conference Mission Board gave its approval.
In 1954 a site was purchased at the corner of what is now known as East 16th and South Bend. The extent to the vision can be more fully appreciated when we realize that at the time of purchase the site of our church home today was a cow pasture. Work proceeded quickly and in 1955 the Dedication Service was held in the Church. The dedication of the Christian Education Wing occurred in 1961.
In 1970, the congregation united with the United Church of Canada. The United Church of Canada marked forty years in 2008 with the Evangelical United Brethren as part of its heritage. The United Church is celebrating 100 years in 2025.
A poem by one of our lifelong and beloved members Ivah Breimer, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 102, captures the life and work of Linden Park Church past and present:
I know we’re proud of Linden Park
We have members tried and true,
But what can one do all alone?
For we depend on YOU.
And as we work together,
And say we’ve just begun –
As we make our Church, a Growing Church;
May the Master say “Well done.”
